Program Summary

Primary care providers face complex challenges everyday in their busy practices. With rapid changes in medicine, staying informed about new developments can be equally challenging. Our goal in this CME activity is to help you hone your skills in the diagnosis and management of patients with varied conditions you are likely encountering in your practice.

We have recruited a faculty of well-known thought leaders and experienced teachers who, as clinicians themselves, understand the challenges you face every day as a primary care provider. Our faculty will be at your disposal to provide evidence-based science, current treatment guidelines, discuss challenging cases, and provide answers for you that can ultimately lead to better health care for your patients. The presentations will include several interactive cases and discussion sessions to keep you actively learning.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the risk for, and impact of, hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes; Integrate strategies to reduce the risk of glycemic variability into the care of patients with diabetes; Recognize how to use SMBG or newer CGM devices to reduce the risk of dysglycemia/hypoglycemia; Differentiate between available insulin preparations and their effects on glycemic variability and hypoglycemic risk.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the burden and epidemiology surrounding HIV risk and transmission; Utilize US Public Health Service (USPHS)/US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) clinical practice guidelines: Preexposure Prophylaxis for the Prevention of HIV Prevention in the United States to appropriately screen and determine eligibility for PrEP; Initiate a patient-provider dialog regarding sexual health and a sexual behavior assessment; Implement appropriate HIV-prevention strategies for initiation and monitoring of patients on PrEP.
  3. Review the epidemiology and impact of pseudobulbar affect (PBA); Discuss the importance of early recognition of PBA in the primary care, nursing home, and rehabilitation settings; Describe diagnostic tools and criteria for objective diagnosis of PBA; Utilize evidence-based therapies to effectively manage PBA.
